The MacBook Air memory shortage has moved from a footnote to a front-page problem for Apple, with buyers on the company’s own website now facing waits stretching into late August and, for some configurations, into September. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first flagged the supply strain on Apple’s more niche machines, the Mac mini and Mac Studio. The constraint has now spread to the company’s bestselling computer.
How AI Demand Redirected the Memory Supply Chain
The root cause is structural, not logistical. Micron’s fiscal year 2025 annual filing with the SEC states that AI-driven demand accelerated and outpaced industry supply during 2025, with Micron shifting a portion of its DRAM output toward data centre and hyperscale cloud customers to meet demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products. Consumer devices were, in effect, lower in the queue.
Micron’s fiscal Q4 2025 earnings call materials confirm that calendar 2025 bit supply growth came in below industry bit demand growth for non-HBM DRAM and for NAND. Broadening demand across end markets tightened supply further. In plain terms: chipmakers prioritised AI server customers, and the pool of memory available for laptops shrank.
The revenue data illustrates the shift in stark terms. Micron’s quarterly filing for the three months ended 27 November 2025 recorded DRAM revenue of $10.812 billion, up from $6.400 billion in the same period a year earlier. The difference is largely the premium that AI-hungry hyperscalers pay for specialised memory, crowding out the commodity LPDDR chips that go into consumer laptops.
ASML’s 2025 annual report adds a forward-looking dimension: toward the end of 2025, both DRAM and NAND demand increasingly outstripped supply, producing a strong pricing environment. ASML also notes that the rollout of edge AI on PCs and smartphones will drive additional memory content in those devices, meaning demand-side pressure on consumer memory is not going away.
MacBook Air Availability Takes the Hit
Apple launched the MacBook Air with its M5 chip on 3 March 2026, offering 13- and 15-inch models in sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver, with pre-orders opening on 4 March and units shipping from 11 March. That launch cadence now looks optimistic given what followed in the supply chain.
Gurman reports that Apple is attempting to manage the MacBook Air memory shortage by raising prices and sourcing memory from Chinese suppliers. Neither measure has yet visibly cleared the backlog for buyers checking stock online.
The commercial signals are telling. Apple delayed its latest back-to-school promotion from its usual June timing. Marketing material for that campaign shifted focus toward the base model of the MacBook Pro, and carries a caveat that would be unusual in any prior year: ‘MacBook Air subject to availability.’
Micron’s Q4 FY2025 earnings call materials project further DRAM supply tightness through calendar 2026, citing low supplier inventories, constrained node migration as the industry manages extended DDR4 and LPDDR4 end-of-life cycles, and longer lead times and higher costs for new wafer capacity globally. Apple is navigating conditions that chipmakers themselves do not expect to ease quickly.
For consumers, the practical calculus is straightforward: anyone who needs a MacBook Air before the academic year begins should order now, accept a wait, or look at the MacBook Pro base model that Apple itself is now pushing. The back-to-school window will likely pass before supply normalises.
