The OpenAI Codex Micro keypad is a sturdy, frosted-keyed macro pad that costs $230, pairs with ChatGPT and its agentic coding tool Codex, and arrives at precisely the moment OpenAI’s hardware ambitions are attracting the most uncomfortable kind of attention.
OpenAI built the device in partnership with Work Louder, a Montréal-based specialist in programmable mechanical macro pads. OpenAI describes it as a limited-run collaboration, and the product shipped with a Codex Icon Keyset containing 32 extra keycaps. The internal product identifier is kbd-1.0-codex-micro.
The layout is straightforward enough: six frosted agent keys across the top, each assignable to a specific ChatGPT session or Codex project, and six command keys below them. A dial lets users adjust the reasoning level mid-task. A dedicated dictation button lets users speak a request rather than type it; a send button fires it off. Colour-coding handles the feedback loop: white for idle, blue for thinking, green for complete, red for error.
According to the Work Louder setup guide, the Micro supports up to six programmable layers, with a touch sensor on the bottom left to cycle between them and three LEDs to indicate which layer is active. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB cable; plugging in a cable while in Bluetooth mode keeps it in BLE mode and charges the device simultaneously.
Fun Once You’ve Learned the Ropes, Puzzling Before That
The Micro’s appeal is narrow by design. It is aimed squarely at ChatGPT power users and coders, and even that audience has been sceptical. Reddit reviewers have been broadly hostile, with one calling the device ‘a prank and not a real product.’ The independent outlet Aftermath was harsher still, arguing the $230 price tag is difficult to justify alongside cheaper off-the-shelf and DIY alternatives. The title of that review: ‘OpenAI’s expensive macropad feels engineered to piss me off specifically.’
Those criticisms have a point. Work Louder’s own Creator Micro 2 retails for $199 and offers 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, a touch sensor, up to six programmable layers, and compatibility with Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. The question any prospective buyer has to answer is what the extra $31 and the ChatGPT-native integration actually buy them.
The honest answer: quite a lot, if you live inside ChatGPT. Once programmed, toggling between sessions via physical keys while dictating requests is genuinely faster than mousing around. But there is a learning curve. Programming the keys, memorising the colour states, and building the habit all take time. For users who rarely open ChatGPT, the investment almost certainly does not pay off.

The OpenAI Codex Micro Keypad and the Apple Lawsuit Hanging Over It
The device’s release lands inside a fraught legal moment for OpenAI’s hardware push. On 10 July 2026, Apple filed suit against OpenAI in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging systematic theft of trade secrets. The filing named two former Apple employees now at OpenAI: Chang Liu, a former senior system electrical engineer, and Tang Yew Tan, a former vice president of product design for iPhone and Apple Watch.
Apple’s allegations are specific. Liu allegedly downloaded confidential hardware files onto an Apple-issued device he kept after leaving the company. Tan allegedly directed job candidates still employed at Apple to bring actual components to OpenAI interviews for what the filing characterises as show-and-tell sessions. Apple’s complaint also alleges OpenAI used a proprietary Apple metal finishing technique, purportedly by misleading a manufacturing partner into believing it had Apple’s authorisation.
The lawsuit also names io Products, the hardware startup OpenAI acquired for $6.4 billion, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Apple’s filing contends the misconduct ran deep: ‘at every level, from members of its Technical Staff to its Chief Hardware Officer, and in coordination with business partners, OpenAI has been stealing Apple’s trade secrets and confidential information,’ according to CNBC. OpenAI’s spokesperson Drew Pusateri replied: ‘We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere.’
Apple’s lawsuit followed OpenAI successfully fending off a separate legal challenge from Elon Musk’s xAI, according to Reuters. Apple’s filing states that more than 400 former Apple employees now work at OpenAI, a figure that gives the suit its scale.
For now, the Micro is what OpenAI has to show in hardware. The Apple case will determine how much of the broader ambition survives intact.
