Cursor India pricing took a concrete shape on Monday when the AI coding startup launched Cursor Start, a ₹649-a-month plan built exclusively for Indian developers and priced at roughly a third of the company’s standard $20-a-month Pro subscription. The move is the startup’s most deliberate bet yet on one of the world’s densest concentrations of software engineering talent, arriving weeks before its expected acquisition by SpaceX closes.
India is already Cursor’s third-largest market globally, and the company says its user base there more than tripled over the past year. Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, described the decision to localise pricing in India first as straightforward. ‘We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale,’ he said. ‘The technical competency of the country and the engineering talent that already exists make it a very natural fit.’
What Cursor India Pricing Actually Buys
According to Cursor’s official changelog, the Start plan gives subscribers generous access to its own Cursor models, including Grok 4.5 (at fixed medium effort, non-fast) and Composer (non-fast), alongside always-on cloud agents, the Cursor iOS app with remote control, and plugins, Model Context Protocol servers, hooks, and skills. The plan is billed in Indian rupees and accepts both credit and debit cards as well as India’s Unified Payments Interface.
What it does not include is equally telling. Unlike the Pro tier, Cursor Start carries no access to frontier models from OpenAI or Anthropic, and excludes advanced features such as Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK. The plan is built primarily on Cursor’s own models, which carry lower operating costs than third-party frontier integrations. Green said that design choice makes the lower price commercially sustainable rather than a loss leader.
To prevent arbitrage, Cursor says it will run multiple checks, including VPN-deterrence measures, to ensure Start remains available only to individual users in India.
The Developer Market Cursor Is Targeting
The scale of the opportunity is real. India now accounts for over 15% of GitHub’s global user base, with 27 million developers on the platform, up from 21.9 million in October 2025, according to the Economic Times. More than two million of those joined in 2026 alone. Indian developers have also made more than 7.5 million contributions to open-source AI projects on GitHub, and India accounts for one in seven new developers globally, the highest share of any single country, according to ET Datacenters.
Cursor is not the first global AI company to run this playbook. OpenAI and Anthropic have both introduced India-specific plans over the past year. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go is priced at ₹399 a month in India, according to Times of India, which also notes that Perplexity partnered with Bharti Airtel to offer services free to 360 million subscribers, while Google partnered with Reliance Jio to provide free access to Gemini Pro, both moves dating to the second half of 2025.
Green pointed to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go as a precedent for geographic expansion. ‘Now, if this model proves that we could take it to other markets, perhaps we will. But I think it’d be crazy to say we would never do it elsewhere,’ he said.
SpaceX Acquisition and What Comes After
The India push lands against an unusual corporate backdrop. SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor, whose parent company is Anysphere, in a $60 billion all-stock deal, with the merger agreement filed with the SEC on 16 June 2026, according to CNBC. Under the structure, a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary named X67 Inc. will merge with and into Anysphere, which will survive as a SpaceX subsidiary. Cursor shareholders will receive SpaceX Class A common stock, with the exchange ratio set using SpaceX’s seven-day volume-weighted average closing price before closing. The deal is expected to close in Q3.
The financial stakes around the transaction are steep. If the deal is not consummated, SpaceX agreed to pay Cursor a termination fee of $1.5 billion plus $8.5 billion in computing resources, according to SpaceX’s IPO filings as reported by CNBC. SpaceX had first disclosed in April that it had secured the right to acquire Cursor for $60 billion, or alternatively to pay $10 billion for the companies’ joint work, before formalising the agreement after its Nasdaq listing under ticker SPCX, according to Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance.
The partnership between the two companies predates the formal deal. SpaceX and Cursor began collaborating in April on a next-generation coding and knowledge-work AI, an arrangement that included SpaceX providing GPU cluster compute capacity and collaboration involving the Colossus training supercomputer, operated through SpaceX’s xAI business, according to GovCon Wire.
Green said Cursor will operate independently until the transaction closes, and that India expansion plans were already under way before the deal was formalised. Once it does close, he suggested SpaceX’s existing Starlink footprint in India could lower commercial and operational barriers for Cursor’s growth there. Beyond the pricing launch, Cursor has also hired its first salesperson in India, expects a second leader to join in Delhi, and is building out a government affairs office alongside three technical customer support hires across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Enterprise adoption in India remains early, Green acknowledged, with traction so far concentrated among individual developers, startups, and universities. Banking and large enterprises are the next targets. Whether Cursor gets to pursue that growth under SpaceX’s ownership, or as a stand-alone company paying out a $10 billion exit, depends on whether Q3 delivers on the timeline.
