Toy Story Midway Mania Closing , The Refurbishment With the Most Interesting Timing Disney Has Had in Years

The pastel-colored facades, the Incredicoaster track visible overhead, and the aroma of popcorn wafting from the kiosks near the entry are all instantly recognizable when you walk into Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure on any given morning. As of right now, Toy Story Midway Mania is not operational in the pier’s corner where it has been since 2008.

There is still the blue-and-yellow signage. The happy carnival exterior is still there. However, on April 6th, the attraction went black and was marked as unavailable on the Disneyland app. Disney has provided guests with very little information. A permit submitted to the state of California states that electrical repair is necessary and that a mounted projector has to be replaced. Silence after that.

Technically, the shutdown was not unexpected. In order to give visitors around six weeks’ notice, Disneyland Resort modified its operating schedule in February to reflect the commencement date of April 6. They did not specify when the attraction may reopen, how long the renovation would take, or what exactly is being replaced outside of the projector.

Toy Story 5 ContextToy Story 5 premieres in theaters June 19, 2026 — approximately 10 weeks after the April 6 closure; Disney has not confirmed connection between refurbishment and new film
Other Spring 2026 ClosuresGrizzly River Run (closed Jan. 5), Jungle Cruise (closed Feb. 17), Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin, Disneyland Monorail — all currently offline with no confirmed reopening dates
Still OperatingToy Story Midway Mania versions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Walt Disney World) and Tokyo DisneySea (Tokyo Disney Resort) remain open normally

As of right now, the app tells visitors to “check back here for updates,” which is Disney’s typical placeholder for renovations without a set schedule. When a family has planned a trip especially to ride something that their seven-year-old has been talking about for months, it is a phrase that inspires minimal confidence.

This closing is especially intriguing because of the timing, and it would be strange to act otherwise. On June 19, 2026, around ten weeks after Toy Story Midway Mania went offline, Toy Story 5 releases in theaters. Like previous major Pixar releases, it is the first fresh addition to the series in years and comes with a barrage of merchandising, promotion, and the kind of cultural attention that makes theme park tie-ins particularly important.

Since the closure was initially announced, Disney fans have been debating if the Pixar Pier attraction will return with scenes, references, or interactive features related to the upcoming movie. Disney hasn’t verified that link. They might be including content from Toy Story 5. It’s also feasible that they’re doing electrical work and changing a projector because both need to be done. The timing makes one reading far more enjoyable than the other, even if both can be true at the same time.

The concurrent closure of Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at the main Disneyland park, which is also closing on April 13th for an indefinite renovation, adds another level of complexity to the problem. This means that, for the first time, both of Disneyland Resort’s interactive shooter attractions with a Toy Story theme will be offline at the same time, and the fifth movie in the same franchise will be out of cinemas in about two months. Disneyland has also been silent on the coincidence.

The practical result for visitors planning springtime visits is that both of the resort’s most well-liked Toy Story experiences won’t be available for at least part of their trip, and probably all summer. For the benefit of anyone considering a trip to Southern California, the Toy Story Midway Mania locations in Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Tokyo DisneySea are still open and running as usual.

This spring, Pixar Pier is undergoing more renovations than normal. Since January 5th, Grizzly River Run has not been accessible. On February 17th, Jungle Cruise ended. Both the Disneyland Monorail and Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin are presently offline. There is no set end date for any of these closures. While not unprecedented, the cluster of concurrent renovations throughout Disney California Adventure and the main Disneyland park is noteworthy enough that Disney fan sites have been creating running lists of what is and is not operational, the kind of information that guests increasingly need to check before they arrive rather than on the day.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that Toy Story Midway Mania hasn’t had a significant update since May 2025, when it gained digital graphics and holographic sticker targets as part of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration. When the anniversary celebration concludes on August 9, 2026, those additions will remain in place; after that, the ride is anticipated to return to its original configuration.

The question the park hasn’t addressed is whether it returns before that date, after that date, or with something completely else layered in. The Toy Story 5 film will debut in theaters while the ride is still dark, which is either a very intentional delay or a lost opportunity, and the only individuals who are aware of this are keeping it a secret.
