Cursor‘s Origin, a new code-hosting platform launched this week, takes direct aim at the market GitHub has owned for nearly two decades, arriving at a moment when that dominance looks more fragile than it has in years.
The AI coding startup, which has become part of SpaceX, unveiled Origin as a fully fledged alternative to GitHub for the core tasks developers rely on daily: storing code in repositories, browsing and editing codebases collaboratively, and managing pull requests. The timing was difficult to ignore. On the same day Origin launched, GitHub suffered a worldwide outage lasting more than six hours, with an error rate approaching 20% globally.
Cursor Origin Code Hosting Takes Aim at a Weakened Giant
GitHub’s recent troubles run deeper than a single bad day. Between May 2025 and April 2026, the platform recorded 257 incidents, of which 48 were classified as major outages, according to an analysis by LeadDev. That works out to roughly one significant disruption per week. February was the worst single month, with 37 incidents logged.
The service that bore the brunt was GitHub Actions, its CI/CD pipeline tool, which suffered 57 outages across the same period. An Actions failure does not merely inconvenience developers; it can freeze an entire engineering workflow mid-build. LeadDev’s Charles Humble describes the cumulative effect as ‘a visible exodus of high-profile users.’
GitHub has not stood still. Earlier this year, after the outage rate appeared to escalate, it announced steps to address availability problems. The platform still counts roughly 180 million developers as users, a figure it reported last October, and remains the largest source-code host in the world. It was founded in 2007 and acquired by Microsoft in 2018.
Interoperability by Design, Agent Features to Follow
Cursor has been careful not to position Origin as a replacement that forces a hard choice. The platform is built to work alongside GitHub, not against it. Developers can mirror their existing repositories into Origin without abandoning their current workflow. As Cursor put it in its blog: ‘Your GitHub repos can sit alongside the ones Cursor hosts. Connect GitHub to Cursor, pick your org, and you’ll see the repos you can sync. Select one and Cursor pulls it in.’
That interoperability lowers the switching cost considerably. A developer can move gradually, testing Origin on new projects while keeping legacy work on GitHub, rather than committing to a full migration.
The company has also said that ‘agent native’ features are coming to the Cursor Origin code-hosting platform, without specifying a timeline. A broader ‘app ecosystem’ is in development to extend Origin’s capabilities across the coding workflow. Those promises remain light on detail for now, but they point to Cursor’s broader ambition: to own more of the development stack than the AI code editor alone.
The editor itself is already expanding beyond the desktop. Cursor’s Agent is now accessible via web and mobile browsers, and can be installed as a Progressive Web App on iOS and Android, allowing developers to trigger bug fixes or feature builds remotely, according to a post on Cursor’s official blog. Origin slots into a product arc that increasingly resembles a full development platform, not a single tool.
Whether it can sustain that arc against an incumbent with 180 million users is another matter. GitHub’s scale, its deep integration with enterprise toolchains, and Microsoft’s resources behind it represent a structural advantage that reliability statistics alone will not dissolve. Cursor will need Origin’s agent features to land well, and land soon, before the frustration driving developers to look elsewhere settles back into inertia.
The first real test arrives when GitHub stabilises its infrastructure. If the outages stop, so might the urgency. For Cursor, the window may be narrower than the launch week momentum suggests.
