The Pivotal CEO departure of Ken Karklin, confirmed this week by the Larry Page-backed electric aircraft company, closes a four-year chapter at one of the more unusual bets in personal aviation. Karklin did not cite a specific reason for leaving; a press release said only that he is ‘pursuing new endeavors.’

Together, we’ve moved beyond the promise of light eVTOL and proved it out in practice,’ Karklin said in a statement. ‘This industry has moved past prototypes and press releases; it’s now operating in the real world, under real constraints, with real consequences for the future of Advanced Air Mobility.’
Karklin steps down roughly two years after Pivotal began selling its Helix aircraft, a single-seat electric flyer that costs around $200,000 and does not require a pilot’s licence to operate.
Mike Ross Steps In as Interim Chief
Replacing Karklin on an interim basis is Mike Ross, who joined Pivotal’s board of directors in November 2025. Ross brings a background that spans military service, aerospace software, and emerging aviation platforms. He served in the U.S. Navy before moving into the commercial sector.
Most recently, Ross served as Senior Vice President of Global Data at Jeppesen ForeFlight, the aviation data and navigation software business, according to the Pivotal newsroom. Before that posting, he joined Boeing Digital Aviation Solutions as a General Manager, founding an innovation group focused on uncrewed aircraft and advanced air mobility, and later helped guide Jeppesen ForeFlight through its transition from Boeing to an independent private company.
More than two decades of experience across defence aviation, autonomy, and global flight data systems give Ross a technical grounding that extends well beyond a typical board seat, though he moves into the top role on a temporary basis while the company determines its next permanent leader.

What the Pivotal CEO Departure Means for the Helix Programme
The leadership change lands at a moment when Pivotal is expanding on two fronts. On the consumer side, the fourth-generation Helix is the next product milestone Ross has signalled as a priority. On the defence and emergency-services side, the company’s BlackFly aircraft has now logged more than 10,000 flights.
Last month, BlackFly responded to an emergency call in North Carolina, the first time the aircraft had been deployed for that purpose. Pivotal says it arrived 20 minutes ahead of an ambulance that was dispatched to the same call.
That kind of operational data matters in a sector still working to persuade regulators and the public that electric vertical flight is ready for real-world conditions. Pivotal is one of eight companies selected for the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which was designed to expand testing of these aircraft across the United States. The programme drew more than 30 proposals before the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation’s technical review team narrowed the field to eight participants.
That competitive selection underlines both the ambition crowding the advanced air mobility space and the pressure on every participant to keep executing. Jeppesen, the aviation navigation and data company Ross ran a division of, works across many of the same airspace domains that eVTOL operators will need to navigate as commercial operations scale.
The board announcement from November 2025, reported by GlobeNewswire, described Pivotal at the time as ‘the market leader in light electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.’ Whether that positioning holds through a leadership transition, a fourth-generation product launch, and an increasingly crowded eVTOL market is the question Ross will face from his first day as interim chief.
The search for a permanent CEO, and the commercial trajectory of the fourth-generation Helix, will be the metrics that define what Karklin’s foundation is actually worth.
