    Alcohol Sales Trends Among Gen Z

    Gen Z is changing social drinking habits. This generation drinks less, questions habits more, and pays closer attention to how products make them feel. 

    The appeal of alcohol is fading for many young adults with newer options entering the market. Health, clarity, and control are taking precedence, shaping purchasing decisions. 

    These shifts are already evident in sales data, product marketing, and emerging beverage categories.

    Shifting Alcohol Sales Patterns

    Alcohol sales among younger consumers have dipped over the past few years. Recent alcohol market trends show that younger consumers are contributing much less to overall sales than younger cohorts. According to new data from market research firm Cricana, Gen Z accounted for just 4% of U.S. alcohol sales in 2025, with Gen X and baby boomers driving the majority of the market share (70%). Millennials accounted for 25%.

    Additionally, Gallup polling shows the overall rate of adults who report drinking alcohol has fallen to a record 54%, the lowest in nearly a century of tracking. Respondents said they drank less frequently and reported lower consumption levels. “Young adults had already become less likely to report drinking alcohol a decade ago, but that trend has only accelerated, with the rate falling from 59% in 2023 to 50% today,” the report states.

    Why Gen Z Is Drinking Less Alcohol

    One of the main reasons for Gen Z drinking less is awareness. Unlike the older generations, they grew up with access to health information. For many Gen Z consumers, productivity, mental clarity, and emotional balance matter. 

    With alternatives such as gummies and other cannabis edibles becoming easier to access, Gen Z is moving away from alcohol and toward cannabis. They are also exploring functional beverages that promise energy, focus, or relaxation without intoxicating effects.

    Social media has amplified awareness of these options, and peer influence often reinforces moderation as a positive lifestyle choice. 

    THC Drinks as a Growing Alternative

    As alcohol consumption slows, THC-infused beverages are gaining attention. These drinks offer a different kind of social experience, with euphoric and relaxing effects and no hangover. 

    Many top THC beverage brands, like Crescent Canna THC Drinks, have drawn in Gen Z with their delicious flavors, low-calorie content, and range of potencies for every experience level. 

    From a market perspective, THC beverages are filling a gap. They offer a superb option for those people who want to socially participate without drinking alcohol. This balance for Gen Z takes precedence.

    Flavor, Function, and Social Fit

    One of the predominant factors influencing beverage sales worldwide is taste. Given that Gen Z expects more than sweetness or novelty, many alcohol alternatives focus on clean profiles, low sugar, and subtle blends.

    Consumers want to know how an alcohol alternative will affect them. Will it calm them? Will it feel lightly uplifting? Will it be better suited for a night party or event? Will it be best for a small gathering? 

    Social ties are of utmost importance as Gen Z values shared moments. So, they want options that don’t pressurize them into drinking alcohol. This makes the new variety of alcohol alternatives a great fit. Convenience is also crucial. Ready-to-drink products, single-serve cans, and beverages designed for portability are appealing options.

    What the Data Suggests Going Forward

    Alcohol is not disappearing, as older generations still drive a large share of the sales. But the growth amongst Gen Z is pretty limited, given their views on alcohol addiction and its side effects, and brands can see this difference. Bars, beverage companies, and retailers are already making the shift.

    A Generational Shift That Is Still Unfolding

    It is essential to remember that Gen Z is not anti-social or anti-fun. They are aware and mindful and no longer see drinking alcohol as a mandatory rite of passage like the older generations. 

    Alternatives that support moderation and flexibility are preferred by Gen Z to match their changing mindset.
