Thinking About Installing A Fence? Here Are 5 Reasons Why You Should

If you are like many homeowners across the country you probably consider your property to be one of your most important assets.  After all, you have worked hard to purchase, upgrade, and maintain your home and the area surrounding it. You may currently be considering another update: installing a fence. Adding a fence around all or a portion of your property is a very common upgrade for homeowners to undertake.  Here are five reasons why you should consider adding a fence to your property.

Security

The number one reason homeowners add a fence to their property is security.  Keeping intruders at bay is much easier when you have a fence that shields a portion or all of your yard.  Regardless of where you live there is some form of crime that a fence will help shield your and your family from.  Not only does a fence protect your valuables, it acts as a deterrent for trespassers and intruders.  Security fences should be relatively high and fully enclosed so that there are no areas where an intruder could slip through.

Added Privacy

You’ve installed a pool, an outdoor kitchen, and a brand new firepit.  But everytime you go to relax in your backyard oasis all you can see and hear are the next door neighbors.  It’s time to add a privacy fence.  Privacy is one of the most important aspects of owning a home that is often overlooked until it is gone.  If you are searching for privacy you will want to add a fence with quite a bit of height.  Vinyl fences are the most common type of privacy fence.  They provide adequate height and offer fully closed siding. Privacy fences can also be made of wood or aluminum.  Fences that will not work for privacy are chain link fences and wrought iron fences.

Marking Property Lines

When your yard does not have fencing it can be difficult to see where your property lines are.  Installing a fence defines boundaries between your neighbor’s yard and your own.  While you may be friends with your current neighbor, this may not always be the case.  A fence will help avoid disputes with your neighbors over land.  It will also help you determine where your yard ends so that if you plan to renovate your backyard by adding a pool, outdoor kitchen, fireplace, or deck you will have a predetermined area to work with.  If you are simply making a mark of where you property ends, then a small wood fence will suffice.  If you are not interested in upkeep you could choose a small decorative vinyl fence.

Safety

Homeowners that are also parents of children or pets are most interested in creating a safe environment for their little ones to play.  A fence around your yard will keep children and pets within the safety of your yard while keeping others outside of your yard area.  Fences that provide the most safety are ones that cannot be climbed or that do not allow ample space between rails for children or pets to squeeze through.  These fences include high privacy fences and medium height chain-link fences.

Decorative Purposes

If you are simply looking for a fence to add to the aesthetic of your home you probably do not want a full privacy fence.  INstead you will most likely be looking for a lower more decorative fence.  If this is the case, first decide on what type of fence will match the exterior of your home.  Most people choose wood or wrought iron material for their decorative fence.  A wood fence will give you the most options in terms of decorative feel as well as the number of colors or stains that are available.

There are many reasons to add a fence to your property.  You should be able to find many fencing materials, heights and designs that will fit your needs.  What type of fence you install will depend upon your needs, your budget, and your property area.
