A new study reveals that today’s over-60s are better preparing for retirement than previous generations, thanks to the benefits of remote working. The survey, which involved 2,000 working Brits of all ages, found that 26% of those in their sixties have embraced new hobbies while working from home.

According to the research by Smart Energy GB, 67% of employed over-60s are currently in hybrid roles, and 33% work from home daily. This flexibility has proven ideal for easing into retirement, with 70% of over-60s reporting that avoiding the daily commute has improved their work life.

The study shows that remote working has significantly enhanced the daily lives of older workers, with 94% noting improvements due to reduced stress (66%) and more time with partners (31%). Additionally, 24% have used their extra time at home for healthier cooking and fitness activities.

A notable 37% of older workers have started “side hustles,” such as tutoring, app testing, reselling clothes, gardening, or blogging, to earn extra income. Remarkably, 65% of over-60s report enjoying remote work more than younger generations, who rate their satisfaction at 60%.

The ability to manage their own time (64%) and achieve a better work-life balance (57%) has enabled many to explore new hobbies in preparation for full retirement. Popular activities among older remote workers include walking (48%), gardening (23%), running (19%), meditation (18%), and yoga (17%).

However, 71% of older workers acknowledge that working from home increases energy usage. They report higher energy consumption for computers (59%), heating (40%), and additional appliances like TVs and washing machines. Consequently, 85% are seeking ways to cut their energy bills, with 48% considering returning to the office more this winter to save on heating costs.

Smart Energy GB advises that those working from home should monitor their energy usage closely and consider upgrading to a smart meter. Smart meters provide real-time energy usage data, helping users manage their consumption and potentially access energy-saving schemes.

Overall, 91% of over-60s surveyed are satisfied with their careers, highlighting the positive impact of flexible working arrangements on their preparation for retirement.
